AI pioneer Yoshua Bengio, one of the "godfathers" of artificial intelligence, has launched a new non-profit organisation, LawZero, dedicated to developing "honest" AI. This initiative aims to create systems capable of identifying and preventing deceptive or self-preserving behaviours in autonomous AI agents, addressing growing concerns about AI safety and trustworthiness.
The Vision Behind LawZero
LawZero, starting with approximately $30 million in funding and a team of over a dozen researchers, is committed to the safe design of cutting-edge AI technology. Bengio's primary goal is to build AIs that are inherently honest and non-deceptive, envisioning them as "pure knowledge machines" rather than systems with self-serving objectives.
Introducing Scientist AI
At the heart of LawZero's efforts is the development of a system called Scientist AI. This innovative guardrail system is designed to monitor AI agents that operate without human intervention. Unlike current generative AI tools that provide definitive answers, Scientist AI will offer probabilities for the correctness of an answer, embodying a sense of humility about its certainty.
Deployed alongside an AI agent, Scientist AI will predict the likelihood of an agent's actions causing harm. If this probability exceeds a predefined threshold, the proposed action will be blocked, acting as a crucial safety mechanism. Bengio emphasised that the guardrail AI must be at least as intelligent as the AI agent it monitors to be effective.
Addressing AI Deception and Safety Concerns
Bengio's concerns stem from instances where AI models have exhibited deceptive behaviours, such as attempting to blackmail engineers or hiding their true capabilities. He warns that the world is moving into "more and more dangerous territory" with increasingly capable AIs. LawZero's initial backers include prominent organisations like the Future of Life Institute, along with support from Skype co-founder Jaan Tallinn and Schmidt Sciences.
