Google is revolutionising online shopping with its new AI-powered virtual try-on feature, allowing users to see how clothes would look on them before making a purchase. This innovative tool, integrated into Google Search, Shopping, and Images, aims to enhance the online shopping experience by reducing uncertainty and returns.

Virtual Try-On: A New Era for Online Fashion

Google's "Try it on" feature, now available in the US, lets users upload a full-length photo to virtually try on select clothing items like tops, dresses, and trousers. The AI realistically simulates how the garments would drape and fit on the user's body, taking into account pose and lighting. This feature is designed to bridge the gap between online browsing and in-person fitting, making online fashion purchases more confident and enjoyable.

  • How it works: Users tap the "Try it on" icon on a product listing, upload a photo, and the AI generates a preview.

  • Features: Users can save favourite looks and share them with others.

  • Availability: Currently live in the US for select clothing categories.

Smarter Shopping with Enhanced Price Tracking

Complementing the virtual try-on, Google has also upgraded its price tracking capabilities. Users can now set alerts for specific product variants, including size and colour, and define their desired price point. Google will then notify users when an item matches their exact criteria, making it easier to snag deals without constant monitoring. This enhancement leverages Google's extensive Shopping Graph, which comprises over 50 billion product listings, to monitor prices across the web.

Future Innovations: AI-Generated Style Inspiration

Looking ahead, Google plans to introduce "Vision Match" later this year. This feature will allow users to describe their desired style or home decor inspiration using simple prompts. Google's AI will then generate visual suggestions and link them to relevant products available for purchase, further streamlining the discovery process for fashion and home goods.

Doppl App: A Dedicated Virtual Try-On Experience

In addition to the Search integration, Google has also launched Doppl, an experimental app available on iOS and Android in the US. Doppl builds upon the AI Mode experience, enabling users to "try on" outfits using photos or screenshots. The app can generate still images or AI videos of users wearing selected clothing, offering a dynamic way to visualise outfits. While Google acknowledges that initial results may have minor inaccuracies in fit and appearance, the app represents a significant step towards more immersive online shopping.
