Microsoft has unveiled a groundbreaking AI system, MAI-DxO, capable of diagnosing complex medical conditions with significantly higher accuracy than human doctors. Microsoft's new AI tool, the Microsoft AI Diagnostic Orchestrator (MAI-DxO), has demonstrated a remarkable ability to diagnose illnesses with an accuracy rate four times higher than experienced human physicians. Tested against 304 complex cases from the New England Journal of Medicine, MAI-DxO achieved an 85.5% accuracy rate, compared to an average of 20% for a panel of 21 human doctors. This significant leap in diagnostic capability is attributed to the system's innovative design, which simulates a virtual panel of collaborating AI agents.


How MAI-DxO Works

MAI-DxO operates as an "orchestrator," coordinating multiple AI agents, each with a specific role, to analyse cases, form hypotheses, and determine necessary tests. This multi-perspective approach mirrors the collaborative process of a team of medical specialists. The system's ability to iteratively request information and order tests, while also considering cost-effectiveness, sets a new benchmark for clinical AI.


  • Virtual Panel: The system comprises a virtual panel of five distinct AI bots, including "Dr Hypothesiser," "Dr Test-Chooser," and "Dr Challenger," which deliberate internally to arrive at a diagnosis.
  • Cost-Effective Diagnosis: MAI-DxO proved more cost-effective, often selecting less expensive tests without compromising diagnostic quality. Even with a budget of $2,000, it maintained over 70% accuracy, significantly outperforming human doctors who spent an average of $2,963 on tests.
  • Rigorous Testing: The AI was tested on cases from the New England Journal of Medicine, known for publishing complex medical scenarios, ensuring the system had to independently arrive at diagnoses without prior exposure to the cases in its training data.
